Mulching is a process in agriculture where the soil around plants or crops is covered with plastic to enhance soil and plant health. In India, farmers employ two types of Mulching practices, organic and inorganic, depending on the crop conditions and needs. This process is implemented for several reasons, including improving soil moisture, reducing weed growth, enhancing crop outcomes, and decreasing soil temperature, among others.
Two types of Mulching
The organic Mulches process involves using organic materials, such as straw, which is used for soil fertilisation. Hay is also used to cool the surface, as well as straw, wood chips, grass clippings, shredded leaves, and more, to improve soil moisture.
The inorganic mulch process involves shielding the soil with plastic film, landscape fabric, gravel, stones, or rubber mats. It makes soil more fertile and also saves water. However, plastic Mulching can be costly; it is not as easy to spray fertilisers as organic Mulching, and it’s not environmentally friendly.
