You’ve probably heard of the sober curious movement a gentle invitation to question our relationship with alcohol. Rather than diving into full abstinence, I simply asked myself: “Do I really want this drink?” By leaning into curiosity, I found relief from the after‑effects of late‑night happy hours. Yes, taking a break from booze can feel stigmatized, especially among young adults in tech who brag about their bar‑hopping exploits. But framing it as a personal experiment “I’m just curious tonight” made it feel adventurous, not deprived.

2. Explore Soberish & Mindful Drinking

I’ll admit, the idea of giving up cocktails entirely felt extreme. That’s where soberish comes in: a middle path between full sobriety and mindless drinking. Instead, I’d stretch, step outside, or practice a quick breathing exercise. Treating these pauses as non‑negotiable rituals helped me cut back on mental clutter. My code reviews became sharper, and I noticed fewer midday energy crashes.

4. Simplify Your To‑Do List

Overcommitting is a silent clarity killer. For months, I juggled side projects, meetups, and family obligations until I hit burnout. My antidote? A ruthless audit of my calendar. I asked: “Which commitments truly move the needle for my career and well‑being?” The answer wasn’t every hackathon or every Slack channel. By trimming back to essentials, I reclaimed mental real estate. This kind of abstinence from extra tasks felt strange at first after all, in IT culture, busyness is a badge of honor. Finally, I rediscovered the power of “doing nothing.” Before bed, I journal one page a brain dump of thoughts, worries, or ideas. No screens allowed. On weekends, I block out a two‑hour “thinking window” to plan the week ahead, reflect on wins, and pinpoint what to cut back next. This habit of intentional stillness supercharged my creativity at the keyboard. Problems that once felt unsolvable in a caffeine‑fueled haze now yield elegant solutions when my mind is rested.
